SHOPPERS struggling to get their hands on one of the nation’s most popular hot sauces are deciding to opt for a different brand.
Costco shoppers say they’ve found a dupe for the Huy Fong Foods Sriracha as the hot sauce shortage continues to plague retailers across the country.
California-based Huy Fong Foods had to cut production in 2022 when a drought in Mexico led to a scarcity of the sauce’s signature red jalapeño peppers, the U.S. Sun previously reported.
While many customers were relieved when the condiment made its way back to US shelves in the fall, some shoppers have still had trouble getting their hands on the fan-favorite sauce.
On top of this, Huy Fong Foods’ sauce is now being made with different peppers following a falling out the company had with Underwood Farms.
According to Food Network, Underwood Farms previously grew the specialty chili peppers for the famed sauce.
And many fans of the original flavor have pointed out a difference in the Huy Fong Foods sauce following the feud.
But what appears to be one brand’s loss is another’s gain as new brands, including a sauce made by Underwood itself, have emerged to satisfy customer demands.
DRIZZLY DUPE
A sriracha sauce many customers are calling a dupe for the popular Huy Fong Foods brand is now being sold at Costco.
And it’s only $8 for two bottles according to a user on the Reddit Costco forum.
Consumers took to the thread to speculate on the copycat sauce by brand Underwood Farms.
After posting a picture holding two of the Underwood Farms sauces, a user claimed that “a bunch of new Sriracha sauces have hit the market but none are as good as the original green cap Huy Fong stuff.”
“Hoping this proves a worthwhile replacement,” he added.
“I put it on everything,” wrote one user.
Another user said they spotted the sauce at a Costco in California.
They need to make this available beyond Soca,” one user wrote.
And another claimed it was in their Austin store.
Someone even said they scooped it up in Indiana.
“We have a recently purchased bottle of Huy Fong and just do not like it – it’s not the same, color is different as well. We will seek out Underwood’s new product,” one user commented.
In addition to the signature red peppers, Huy Fong’s Sriracha also has vinegar, salt, sugar, and garlic.
It’s often eaten with noodle dishes like stir fry and pho, but it also goes well on items like wings, burgers, and fries.
